Smiltė Banevičiūtė

I am a visual artist based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. While photography is my primary medium, I often blend it with other forms of expression to create immersive, interactive experiences. My artistic practice is deeply influenced by my home country - Lithuania. Growing up surrounded by nature shaped the way I see the world, making me sensitive to the ways we relate to our environment.
I consider myself an explorer, drawn to details and the endless possibilities within nature’s elements. My process is both intuitive and research-based - I begin by capturing an image or an idea and then experiment with different materials, print techniques, and presentation forms. I am interested in working with glass prints and exploring the possibilities of VR. My final works are presented in an abstract form as interactive installations inviting the viewer to engage with the piece beyond traditional observation.
My recent work has been influenced by Astrida Neimanis, a feminist scholar whose research explores bodies of water and their entanglements with human and non-human life. Her concepts of hydrofeminism and weathering deeply resonate with me - hydrofeminism emphasizes the interconnectedness of bodies and water, while weathering considers how time, exposure, and external forces shape both human and environmental bodies. These ideas align with my ongoing exploration of gratitude, movement, and emotional connections to the natural world. My latest projects - Dear Water (June 2024) and Dear Weather (December 2024) - directly engage with these themes.
My work leaves space for interpretation. However, I hope for more than personal appreciation encouraging my audience to take action. Whether through shifts in routine, newfound awareness, or meaningful gestures toward environmental care, I seek to inspire meaningful change for nature’s sake.
